Malta`s Ornamental Plants
« on: May 13, 2008, 15:03:59 PM »

This announcement should be better placed here instead of the other topic, sorry. I found this interesting book with about 350 pages and more than 600 full coloured photographs of almost all species (approximately 400) cultivated in the public parks, gardens etc. of the Maltese Islands.

Hi,
I saw it at the Luqa Airport and the large one at the new harbour area.

I bought the paper back version for 24.30 - about 8 cheaper than hardback.

My initial impression was that it is a small book. However, it is a packed with detailed information and excellent but small photos in keeping with the book's size.

All considered it is a valuable quick reference book - its small size allows one to carry it easily in the car's glove box and this is certainly an asset!

I'm glad I bought it and I thank you for recommending it! Smiley

Incidentally I found I have another book by the same author. "Wild plants of Malta" published by PEG Malta 2004.

ISBN 99909-0-370-0

Two other interesting books published by PEG are "The Maltese Countryside Vol 1 and 2" These deal with flora and fauna respectively.

In all 3 books the photos are excellent, but sadly all considered there is minimal documentation.

The book "Ornamental plants of Malta", however contains much detail despite its size. Yet I regret there is no mention of the Farfugium which in my opinion is an omission. Pity really - but then nothing is perfect and the book is a very valuable resource in my library.

That's where the web is superior as all data can be rapidly updated and corrected accordingly.

yes, you are right- I missed Farfugium (never seen in public gardens or other places).
Well, there is another nice book about the wild plants...  Wink
(Flora of the Maltese Islands) from the same author
