I was struck by the vivid red of the Weevil - If it were it not a pest, it might be deemed just as attractive as a Red Admiral Butterfly! My reaction was of course, to step on the blighter and squash the Weevil before it could fly away to destroy more palm trees!
I would like to know if Kentia palms are attacked and consequently if it is necessary to register them.

I think we do need more national vigilance about highly competitive and potentially invasive plants which may destroy Malta's indigenous flora in the same way as has happened in Australia and other countries...
Locally, the authorities are already rightly very strict about the cultivation of prohibited plants like cannabis to curb drug abuse.
The concept of the control of importation of plants and their cultivation for Environmental Protection is a new and increasingly more pressing one, as is highlighted, by the consequences of the proliferation of the Potato/Madeira and Balloon vines, if we wish to conserve the Maltese countryside. The irregular immigration of plants is something which must be addressed carefully in order to safeguard our valleys. Plants are not seeking political asylum nor are they refugees! They are introduced because we choose to do so. Surely we must do this more wisely and sensitively.
