Anthurium and Spathiphyllum
« on: July 26, 2010, 14:29:01 PM »

These two plants are in the same family - Araceae - same as Arums and Friar's Cowl...

They can apparently detoxify the air around them, removing benzene and formaldehyde fumes... Abroad they are using them in what are termed sick buildings to remedy the situation. I think they look lovely side by side with their red and white flowers respectively in the shade.  Smiley

Very nice houseplants indeed and despite appearances not too difficult to look after either. My large Dieffenbachia (same family) is also doing well and currently flowering, though the flowers are not really impressive being similar to Monstera flowers or the Lords and Ladies wild plant's flowers.

Actually just wikiing noted that http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dieffenbachia has some good pics of the plants in flower, mine is the Bowmannii.

They really tower but lose their lower leaves and are not so strong stemmed so after a while air layering and taking the top and a stem section off is a good idea and gets you a couple of extra plants, too, rather easily it must be said. And the stump invariably throws up shoots, with any luck more than one, for a fuller plant.

Look at this great web site about air purification properties...

I found this on the plant's label.
